In 1998, Cape Verdean filmmaker Pedro Costa returned to his homeland from Portugal, filled with a desire to tell the stories of the islands that had shaped him. When he first mentioned his cinematic ambitions to his friends, they responded with disbelief. “Cinema on these islands? There are only waves and wind,” they said. For decades, Cape Verde had been known more for its music than for its films, and the idea of making movies in a place with limited resources and sparse infrastructure seemed impossible. But Pedro Costa was determined. Fueled by his passion for storytelling and the rich culture of the islands, he set out to explore Cape Verde's windswept beaches, volcanic landscapes, and colonial towns, capturing the soul of the archipelago. His journey was inspired by the resilience of Cape Verdeans, especially Maria, a woman who fought against the struggles of drought and migration, determined to make her voice heard.
