Gabon: A Tropical Cinema Awakening
In 2002, Gabonese filmmaker Imunga Ivanga returned from Paris to Libreville with a vision to rekindle Gabon's film industry. His family and friends were puzzled. “Why make movies here, when the jungle hides everything and the past still haunts us?” they asked. Gabon, blessed with lush rainforests and an abundance of wildlife, had been overlooked by filmmakers for decades, with its rich biodiversity seen more as an obstacle than an asset. But Imunga saw cinematic potential in the heart of the jungle, among the towering trees and winding rivers. His quest to make Gabon a cinematic hub was inspired by the people he encountered, especially Ndong, an elderly man who had lived in the rainforest all his life and had stories to share about the ancient traditions of his ancestors. Imunga’s journey through the wilderness brought Gabon’s vibrant landscapes and culture to life on screen.
